The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has released an Arabic-language version of Live News, a survival guide for journalists covering war and conflict. It includes chapters on preparation for covering combat situations, abductions and hostage taking, emergency medical aid, and post-traumatic stress. It also provides contacts for training and equipment agencies, and details of how media organizations can help.

Campaigning for Free Expression: A Handbook for Advocates.
A new handbook for human rights activists around the world aims to deliver the tools for effectively organizing campaigns for freedom of expression and the press. The International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) has published the manual, titled “Campaigning for Free Expression: A Handbook for Advocates.

The 120-page manual offers case studies and other guidance on organizing campaigns, investigative missions, coalitions, legal defense, protest letters, and on using the Internet as a tool. IFEX says the book will be especially useful, since threats to journalists, Internet users and human rights activists are on the rise—increasing the urgency of awareness campaigns.

Investigative reporter discusses tips, tools and resources (video)

In two new IJNet videos, American investigative reporter Charles "Chuck" Lewis discusses the basics of investigative reporting.

Lewis is a national investigative reporter and the executive editor at the Investigative Reporting Workshop.  Prior, he was a producer for ABC News and CBS News 60 Minutes and co-founder of the Center for Public Integrity.  Lewis was named as "one of the 30 most notable investigative reporters in the U.S. since World War I" by the Encyclopedia of Journalism.

In the first, "Investigative Reporting Basics," he discusses how to find a story idea that is creative and that will be worth your time.

In Part 2, "Online Resources and Ideas for Finding Data and Reports," he explores where to find resources and reports that are crucial to your research before beginning to interview and write. Lewis offers Web sites that are helpful in finding national and international data and reports, as well as other investigative reporting tips.
